AKYAKA
Akyaka is situated in the province of Mugla, in the south-west of Turkey, between Marmaris, Mugla and Bodrum. Its delightful position at the end of Gokova Gulf, bordered in the north by almost 1000m high Sakartepe Mount, in the south by the wetlands of Gokova plain takes the visitor into its spell.
Akyaka is favoured mostly by those seeking unspoiled nature and refreshing summer climate with a constantly blowing seabreeze.
The main attraction for most of the visitors is the natural beauty of Akyaka, with a multitude of species in the wetlands, among those the nearly extinct water bird – European Fishotter (lutra lutra), in winter months different types of herons, flamingos, migrating pelicans can be observed with some luck.
Akyaka has one of the best picnic grounds surrounded by pine forests, by the sea where you can watch glorious sunsets, make your own barbeque or have a snack in the cafe. The fish restaurants on the bank of the crystal clear “Kadin Armak” (Woman River) where freshly caught fish is perfectly prepared and served, are very well known gourmets throughout Turkey.
You can easily enjoy drives and hikes to the nearby picturesque Sakartepe mountain or beach villages from Akyaka. Paragliding from the height of Sakartepe Mountain is quite fashionable.
Although the history of the district dates back to the early periods the historical ruins found on the site are not of a much significance.
